Here readers will learn Madeline's last name, join her and the girl's for horseback rides and a tour of the world's greatest store, and get a hint of what lies in Miss Madeline's future.' Profusely illustrated with color reproductions of drawings by John Bemelmans Marciano, who is the grandson of the original artist of the Madeline series, Ludwig Bemelmans. While researching his famous grandfather's work, John Bemelmans Marciano made a thrilling discovery?a complete manuscript and sketches of Madeline's only adventure in America. With help from his mother and grandmother (the original Madeline), this delightful work has been brought to colorful fruition. Two additional holiday stories also are included along with warm remembrances and artwork from family archives. This book contains 4 separate tales,3 of which were written by Bemelmans(one was written by his daughter,Barbara.) The title story, however, was originally only a manuscript with sketches that Bemelmans Sr. started while on a trip to Texas to visit Stanley Marcus in 1955. A truncated version was first 'published' by Nieman-Marcus for Xmas, but that is as far as this particular Madeline story went. When John(his grandson) came across it, he decided to augment the original with his own sketches of Texas scenes & had it published for the 60th anniv. of the Madeline series. A fabulous addition to the stories & the one in which we learn her last name!!!!.
